Write The Freakin’ Book: Group Jam

You’re writing a book.
You’ve told everyone you know that you’re writing a book.
Except the document marked ‘book’ on your desktop has been sitting empty for months, maybe even years.

It’s not that you don’t want to be a published author-girl, you’d love to be seen as the go-to girl in your industry, the authority on your subject. It’s not that you don’t have a story to tell either, girl-kind have always told stories, it’s how we roll. It’s our way of saying who we are, where we’ve come from, what we know and where we’re heading, so why does the idea of putting it down on paper and turning it into a hold-in-your hand book feel as icky, hard, awkward and wrong as being on a date with someone you just don’t dig?

Dude, this date sucks. Who serves napkins as actual food?

Right now, writing a book might feel like preparing to rock out on stage in front of thousands of people, when you’ve been sat on the sofa for the last few months watching daytime TV. It can feel overwhelming, daunting, and there’s a chance you’ll think ‘sod it, I won’t bother, I’ll eat a bag o’ kettle chips instead.’ But if rocking out on stage is the one thing you’ve always wanted to do, the adventure you’ve always wanted to have, the experience you’ve always wanted to encounter, you’d do what you could to get performance ready, right?
You’d pick up your guitar, strum a few chords. Ahhh that feels good.
Then maybe you’d join the gym. Yeah, you’d totally join the gym.
You might even buy a new pair of trainers. Except you don’t actually go to the gym.
You’re too busy/it’s too cold/too late/too early – delete as applicable – or if you do go, you don’t break a sweat.

It’s the same when you want to write a book.
It’s the one thing you’ve always wanted to do, you’ve got an incredible idea, you know the world will be better because of your story and you have great intentions, you’ve bought how-to books (except they’re gathering dust on a shelf), you’ve signed up to e-courses (except they’re unopened on your desktop), yet you’re able to find a gazillion reasons as to why you can’t write your book. They may, or may not, include the following:

“I’ve not got enough time…”
“I can’t spell…”
“I’m not a good enough writer…”
” What if no one wants to buy it?”

I hear you.

Which is why I’m sharing my one word, fail-safe secret to turning your incredible book idea in your head into an actual hold-in-your-hand book. You want in? Come close – do you like my perfume? It’s Hugo Boss Red – let me whisper in your ear…
Drum roll please…

Share.

Now, I’m an only child so the whole ‘sharing’ thing didn’t come terribly easy to me at first, but hands down, it is the reason I’m a published author-girl and not someone who talks about being a published author-girl.

Yep, Think Pink, the first book in the Lola Love series for teen girls, was in my head for 2 whole years before I put pen to paper. I was petrified people would laugh at me, that they’d think it was a silly idea or tell me that I couldn’t write, so, to save face, I talked about writing a book. A lot.

That was until I discovered an online group of writers, a word-girl-gang who totally had each other’s back. They gave me the space and permission to play, date and basically make out with my book idea – heavy petting was actively encouraged. We shared techniques, we busted our fears and we told our stories.

Then, guess what? I wrote a freakin’ book.
I say a book, it was a shitty first draft – and yes, that’s totally a book writing term  - that later turned into a book that was published by HarperCollins, that then turned into a bestselling series, that has now currently sold over 300,000 copies worldwide.

Which is why I can think of no better way to tell your story and write your freakin’ book than to team up with like-minded writer-girl rockstars and have a WRITE THE FREAKIN’ BOOK: Group Jam

I was floundering. I was stuck with my writing projects. Lisa helped me to get everything into perspective and sassy-fied me by becoming my own personal cheerleader – minus the lycra, of course…

WRITE THE FREAKIN’ BOOK: Group Jam

WHAT IS IT?
It’s a 6 week writer-girl road trip.

9 Writer-girl rockstars from across the globe put the key in the ignition, and start their badass book writing road trip by dialing into a teleconference line, where we rock out for 90 minutes together, once a week, for 6 weeks. There really is nothing sweeter than when women gather with the intention of writing words and telling stories. We’ll word riff about the book writing adventure, share stories and insight, you’ll ask questions, I’ll answer them, we’ll laugh, we might even cry and each session, I’ll give you essential writer-girl tools to take with you as you head out onto the open road.

WHAT DO I NEED?
Pack whatever you think a writer-girl rockstar needs – my writer-girl necessities include: hot pink leopard print pajamas, a selection of journals but that’s because I am a stationery ho, my yoga mat – pink, natch. – and an endless supply of green tea, but all you really need is access to a phone or skype, a big open heart, a laptop/pen & paper and a kick-ass book idea.

WHAT NEXT?
I’ll provide you with your very own map to badass book writing success. That will show you how to:

♥ Discover your writer-girl mojo
♥ Write a shitty first draft
♥ Heart riff with your words
♥ Create a heart print that will start revolutions

You’ll also briefly stop off at Procrastination Station and Fear and Doubt junction, but only so you never have to go there again, and, just so you know, there will be some ‘alone time’ along the way for you and your book to make out.  I’ll even pinpoint some pretty locales where you two can… y’know, get hot and heavy without being disturbed. Wink.

The best bit about this delicious, soul-filling, bad-ass, book-writing adventure, is that you won’t be doing it alone. Every week, for six weeks on a Friday, we will pull over, find ourselves a sweet spot, and we’ll jam together. You’ll be road-tripping with like-minded writer-girl rockstars, women who want to rock out their words, girls who want to change conversations and maybe start new ones, lady-kind who want to tell their story, and write books that will change their readers lives forever.
Yee-freakin’-hah!

HOW DOES IT WORK?
I appreciate you won’t be able to be on the road at all times, you may have jobs to do, children to attend to, life gets busy, but every week, for 6 weeks, we’ll meet for a word jam. That’s six sessions in total. If for any reason you can’t make it, don’t fret, we’ll record it and you can listen to it back at your convenience. These sessions are 90 minutes long and are going to be fun, interactive and filled-to-the brim with everything you need to turn your story into a badass book. You’ll also receive a PDF of each session with tools, techniques and exercises.

I was so inspired by the first session, that I even managed to make a boring piece of business writing more creative! Lisa encourages you to write from the heart, to be creative and to just do it!

You’ll always be able to find me, I’m the girl with the ridiculously oversized flowers in her hair…

Why I’m your girl.
Not only am I a coach o’ SASS who helps ladykind to love themselves and make big, amazing dreams actually happen, I’m a writer and editor too. I’ve written 10 books in the Lola Love series for teen girls published by HarperCollins. My first adult book, SASSY: The Go-for-it-Girl’s Guide to becoming Mistress of Your Destiny is out now, and for the past 7 years, I have written and edited books to brief, both in Europe and the US, for a variety of publishers, ranging from children’s fiction and annuals, to self-help and personal development books for public figures. In 2012, I became the publisher of SASSY Books, an imprint of John Hunt Publishing, where we publish badass books for go-for-it girls.

Basically, I know my stuff.

When you work with me, I get as excited about your book as you are, I love words and books with all my big thumpity heart, I also know the industry, how it works, how it’s changing and what it’s looking for. So, if you want to WRITE THE FREAKIN’ BOOK, then I’m your girl.

FYI: I am also the best person to go on a road trip with,  just ask my beau. I pack the best snacks, so think of the GROUP JAM as the most juiciest, fun-filled adventure. We’ll be like a hot group o’ Thelma and Louise writer-girl rockstars, but without the whole driving-off-a-cliff ending. That would be awkward.
